Due to a major flood, my house is being rebuilt. The old house was built in 1967 and had all copper piping.
My understanding is that most new builds today use PEX, and that if I don't say anything, my general contractor will hire a plumber who will likely use PEX.
I am concerned about plastic being used in my drinking water lines, especially the hot pipes. We have all heard about microplastics and their dangers and I want to limit my exposure. It's also not clear to me what lingering chemicals might be in the pipes from manufacturing.
What studies have been done on PEX piping to confirm that they are safe, especially long term? If I am concerned for my health, should I insist on copper for the new build?
